Match Reports - Round 1

SL Benfica 2-3 Monaco AS

Monaco managed to labour to a hard win after a 90th minute goal by veteran striker Dauren Kusainov. However, they dominated proceedings throughout the entire game although Benfica managed to equalize twice. Young starlet 25-year old Nihat Kahveci showed glimpses of his skill with 2 assists and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

Roda JC Kerkrade 2-0 Gornik Zabrze

An easy win for Roda who played a semi-youth team with 3 U23 players. Being the weakest team in the division didn’t exactly help Gornik who had to sell off a TF level to stay afloat financially. They were run aground by an attacking Roda team who did them no favours, and if not for keeper Magituka, the scoreline could have been much more than what it was supposed to be.

Trabzonspor 0-1 Etoile du Sahel

Being bankrupt was too much for Trabzonspor, so much so that home advantage couldn’t even save them. Red cards in the 56th and 59th minutes prevented Etoile from performing to their usual standard but a last gasp goal by Vranjes proved to be Trabzonspor’s undoing, although their brave defending of Etoile’s bombardment would have be commendable.

PAOK Saloniki 2-0 Valencia CDF

3 red cards in this high octane game couldn’t stop PAOK from getting their first win of the season. The title contenders showed their mettle to the entire division just how good their team exactly is, with 4 players in the Team of the Round. Valencia being totally dominated just couldn’t fight their way past any part of the PAOK team.

Ajax Amsterdam AFC 2-0 FC Torpedo Kutaisi

The veterans of Ajax managed to put up a second half show as they dismantled 10-man Torpedo Kutaisi to go top of the table. Definitely a convincing performance from the strugglers last season and they could be the surprise of the season. Jak Saz showed exactly why he is one of the top players in the league with a magnificent performance!

Bayern Munich 1-0 Odra Wodzislaw

Bayern surprisingly only won 10-men Odra, albeit 9-men after 81 minutes, only 1-0. There should be cause for concern although the performance of their defence is pretty encouraging after spurning off good attempts by star striker Paponi. Figueroa, a latest addition to the German giants, certainly repaid his manager’s faith in him with a solid defensive performance.

League Round 2

Valencia CDF 1-3 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich showed off their vast quality with a 3-1 win away at the Mestalla over 10-men Valencia. Valencia was helpless against a Bayern team that dismantled them thoroughly before half time when Aak was sent off. Valero managed to score a consolation goal late on, but that didn’t prevent him from being peddled off to Partizan.

Gornik Zabrze 0-1 Ajax Amsterdam AFC

A very slim win for Ajax Amsterdam as on-loan striker Navarreta scored the winner in the dying minutes of the game. Having dominated the entire game, the fans must be wondering how their strikers didn’t manage to bulge the net a few more times.

Monaco AS 2-1 Trabzonspor

Not very encouraging for promotion-seeking Monaco as they won just 2-1 over a bankrupt Trabzonspor. Nihat managed to score the winner after some good work by Geraint Williams, but otherwise a game which saw Kawaguchi as the brightest spark in a Trabzonspor team. Keeping this performance up might actually see them staying up.

Odra Wodzislaw 0-3 SL Benfica

A youth Odra team was overran by a rejuvenated Benfica, looking to earn their first points in Division 2. Although their best player was sent off as early as the 24th minute, Stevanovic and Mild stepped into his shoes to give Benfica a very encouraging start to their season. Definitely a side to behold.

Etoile du Sahel 3-2 Roda JC Kerkrade

A double from Rafael Chereau was unable to prevent Roda from conceding a late goal to a super attacking Etoile. Man of the Match Guezmir netted in the 85th minute to give Etoile all 3 points. Roda looked to have done enough to draw the game until a brilliant through ball from Diatta allowed Guezmir to lob over Hada.

FC Torpedo Kutaisi 2-2 PAOK Saloniki

With both teams very evenly matched, Torpedo managed to grab their first point of the season and could have even gotten all 3 points if not for the heroics of PAOK keeper Jauslin. With only 2 competent defenders and 21 year-old Mykhailenko playing, a very offensive minded Torpedo bombarded Jauslin’s goal, only to be repelled again and again. However, with PAOK’s 3-6-1 formation, they managed to control the midfield and equalized twice from behind.

League Round 3

Roda JC Kerkrade 0-3 Monaco AS

Monaco romped to an easy victory over a youthful Roda team. Roda, who has since sold off most of their stars look to be training youths this season, and possibly paving the way for Valencia or Trabzonspor to stay up. However, that 8th minute red card didn’t help matters as an attacking Monaco put 3 goals past them in the opening 20 minutes, and that score could have gone to double digits had it not been for the heroics of keeper Hada.

Trabzonspor 1-0 Odra Wodzislaw

The first win of the season for Trabzonspor, one that pulled them out of the relegation zone. Yet another youth lineup for Odra as they seem destined for the drop. It was definitely no problem for the Turkish side although they only managed one measly goal and will definitely have to improve.

Bayern Munich 1-1 FC Torpedo Kutaisi

Promotion hopefuls Bayern were held to a draw by battling Torpedo who capitalized on the early dismissal of striker Moran in what was a very even match. Goals from each side in quick succession gave fans some excitement to watch for in an otherwise boring match with the game being held in midfield and few shots being fired by both sides.

PAOK Saloniki 0-3 Ajax Amsterdam AFC

Ajax continued their fairy tale run with yet another clean sheet, another 3 points and straight to the top of the table. An early red card to Oktaras allowed a very defensive Ajax to take control and put 2 past keeper Jauslin, who had a poor night by his standards. Toni added the icing to the cake in the 50th minute and another red card to Nini gave PAOK not chance back into the game. Top brass performance by Jono’s team indeed.

Etoile du Sahel 1-0 Gornik Zabrze

The perfect record still going on for last season’s runner-up after a powerfully headed goal by Trabelsi separated the 2 sides. Gornik seemed to be playing out for a draw with a 6-3-1 formation but ironically, they were to be undone by a defender.

SL Benfica 1-2 Valencia CDF

Improving Valencia recorded a shock win over Benfica away despite losing out in possession. A flurry of goals in the first half was all the match saw, and despite a late dismissal of Evgeniy Chalei, Valencia held on tight, thanks to their keeper, to record their first win of the season, and of course showing Benfica why they managed to stay up last season.

League Round 4

Ajax Amsterdam AFC 0-0 Bayern Munich FC

A very even game from 2 very strong teams and Bayern were unable to use their man advantage to get one over Ajax. Goalie Tom de Vries from Ajax saved a penalty after defender Matoukou was dismissed and managed to repel the Bayern attack time and again. Definitely well done from the league leaders.

Valencia CDF 1-1 Trabzonspor

A draw from the relegation battlers although Valencia should have done enough to win this game. After Roy Charlton’s dismissal early into the second half, the Valencia attack tried to increase their slim lead but to no avail, with Trabzonspor having Kawaguchi to thank. And in the 1st minute of added time, Trabzonspor made Valencia pay after Maverino lobbed a pretty ball over Hirschfeld to share the spoils.

Gornik Zabrze 0-1 PAOK Saloniki

PAOK closed the gap between themselves and the league leaders after the 4 teams above them all dropped points. 1 goal was sufficient to separate them and the bottom team and it remains a surprise why Gornik is still fighting so hard to stay up instead of following in the footsteps of Odra. Certainly such a fight would prove little value after relegation.

Odra Wodzislaw 1-3 Roda JC Kerkrade

The battle between the youth teams was won by the team that used lesser youths. Jonathan Audran managed 2 assists and even a goal as Roda wrapped up the game in the first 15 minutes. Although Odra managed to get a goal back in the 50th minute, it was no more than just a consolation goal as Roda held on to secure a vital win.

Monaco AS 1-1 Etoile du Sahel

The game between the 2nd and 3rd teams resulted in yet another draw as both teams lost their perfect record this season. Both teams were pretty evenly matched and Etoile almost won it in the dying minutes of the game when key midfielder Hendriks was sent off for a second yellow card.

FC Torpedo Kutaisi 2-1 SL Benfica

Benfica lost yet another match to an impressive Torpedo who has already drew both PAOK and Bayern this season. A stellar performance from winger Jones secured the 3 points for the club after both teams were locked at 1-1 at half time. Things do look very bright for Torpedo Kutaisi.

League Round 5

Roda JC Kerkrade 0-2 Valencia CDF

Valencia once again took another step closer to securing Div 2 status by defeating a very young Roda team. After bringing in close to 7 players in so far, manager Estebian has made his aim this season pretty clear. Their 4-5-1 formation clearly dominated Roda’s midfield and was definitely key in winning this relegation battle.

Etoile du Sahel 0-0 Odra Wodzislaw

SHOCK of the season so far. It is a wonder how Etoile’s misfiring strikers managed to hit everything else except the back of the net against a youth Odra team. Of course, we have to give credit to Odra’s keeper Leao but with Etoile having 60% of the possession, their manager must be fuming mad at dropping a needless 2 points in a very close title battle, allowing Bayern to leapfrog them into 2nd position. Amazing for a team that did not even exceed 40k in average wage! (Etoile had at least double that!)

Trabzonspor 3-2 FC Torpedo Kutaisi

2 goals in the final half hour by Maverino ensured Trabzonspor pulled off an upset against a strong Torpedo who had held both PAOK and Bayern to draws earlier in the season. It was certainly a bad night out for legendary keeper Quiroz who is currently on a very bad patch of form. Torpedo squandered a 2 goal lead in the first half and allowed Trabzonspor to battle their way back into the game.

Bayern Munich 4-1 PAOK Saloniki

What was touted as a showdown between 2B’s twin giants ended up in a pretty one-sided win by Bayern. An early dismissal left PAOK with 10-men for majority of the game and a full force attacking Bayern side gave PAOK no way in although Fajitas managed to give PAOK some hope by half time. However, 2 goals in the second half ended any hopes PAOK had and their title bid may very well be over already.

SL Benfica 2-2 Ajax Amsterdam AFC

Ajax conceded their first 2 goals of the season away at Benfica which must definitely be an encouraging result for the Benfica manager. Playing the league leaders who had not even conceded a goal before the game wasn’t a good sign for the newly promoted team but star player Christensen led by example with the first equalizer before Eusebio broke Ajax hearts in the 80th minute.

Monaco AS 1-0 Gornik Zabrze

Monaco barely won at home against Gornik despite having majority of the possession and shots and had to thank young striker Robbie Keane for a last gap goal. Extremely defensive Gornik once again played a 6-3-1 formation and was in the clear for their first points of the season until a nice through pass from Nihat allowed Keane to break the deadlock.

League Round 6

FC Torpedo Kutaisi 1-1 Roda JC Kerkrade

The two relegation-battlers fought out a hard-earned draw and Torpedo would have been disappointed not to get all 3 points after dominating most of the game. A last-minute goal by youth striker Hazard prevented Roda from dropping into the relegation zone, and ironically kept Torpedo there. Harsh result indeed.

Ajax Amsterdam AFC 2-0 Trabzonspor

Ajax kept up the pressure on the league leaders although Volkov received a red card in the 8th minute. A double from Luca Toni pushed Trabzonspor to the edge of the relegation zone and it was an overall magnificent performance from the Dutch team as they played a very fluid game with only 10-men.

Gornik Zabrze 0-0 Bayern Munich FC

Definitely the surprise of the round as Bayern was surprisingly the first team to allow Gornik to earn their first points of the season despite playing a youth squad. Although they were reduced to 10-men near the hour mark, the decision to play young midfielder Zavala seemed to backfire as Bayern did not seem able to trouble Gornik keeper Bell much. In fact, it was Gornik who managed to pull a few saves out of Landreau, who incidentally received the MOM award.

Odra Wodzislaw 2-3 Monaco AS

Yet another narrow win for league leaders Monaco as they managed to keep their slim lead. Having been reduced to 10-men in the 30th minute, they were held to a 1-1 draw at halftime before a quickfire double put them in front. A late goal by Lazar gave the hosts a glimmer of hope but rookie keeper Rustu managed to thwart a late resurgent Odra from gaining a point.

Valencia CDF 0-0 Etoile du Sahel

Yet another brilliant effort from relegation-threatened Valencia as they took matters into their own hands by drawing title contenders Etoile despite having only 10-men for almost half the game. An outstanding performance by the entire defence gave one-man attack Etoile no way in and was definitely a tough point earned.

PAOK Saloniki 2-0 SL Benfica

PAOK had a comfortable win over Benfica to get back straight into the promotion race despite receiving 2 red cards after the hour mark. Benfica were totally unable to muster any decent shots to trouble reserve keeper Leyden and it seems that the brightest spark amongst the promoted clubs are now embroiled in a relegation battle with surprisingly a host of many other teams.
