3K teams cup perfromance review - Round 1

Real Madrid CDF 4 - 1 West Ham United

18. Pere Conget
21. Julio César Gutiérrez
54. Sean Evans
60. Nicolas Ioannou

Comfortable win for Madrid against 4th division West Ham. Drawn Mamelodi Sundowns FC (4E) at home so looking good for the 3rd round.

FK Vojvodina 0 - 1 Bologna FC 1909

70. Mahmoud Ibrahim

Away win in the cup is always a good result but Bologna had to wait until the 70th minute for Ibrahim to score a screamer and break 4th div Vojvodin's brave resistance. Look to have a much tougher away tie in the next round against 3rd division River Plate.

Iraklis Thessaloniki 1 - 2 FK Vardar

28. Stefanos Tsigoulis 80. Zoranco Toleski
115. Juan Román Riquelme

FK Vardar required an extra time winner from star man Riquelme to get past Thessaloniki but they wont mind that as it earned them a home tie in the next round against the managerless Kansas City Wizards from 4T.

Feyenoord Rotterdam 4 - 1 Partizan Tirana
4. Leonard Kruiswijk 90. Mahir Ruli
6. Armands Vanin
14. Edgar Baretto
58. David Degen

Despite a late consolation from Tirana, Feyenoord will be expecting a much tougher test next time out against Boca Juniors from the 2nd division.Midfielder Pruna will be dissapointed at his very harsh second yellow card that saw him watch the last three minutes from the dressing room.

Linfield FC 2 - 1 Barcelona de Guayaquil
6. Filippo Tarini 35. Haoran Chen
48. Raphael Wicky

Barcelona de Guayaquil will be dissapointed that despite have the greater share of possession and finishing playing against 9 men they still went down to Linfield of the 4th division. The manager will have been dissapointed to concede in that all important first 10 minutes.

RC Lens 2 - 0 FC Skonto Riga
44. Donald Dixon
88. Neil Webb

Skonta Riga, another of the away teams from 3K were undone by a superb performance from Lens Captain Dixon who score one and seemed to pop up all over the pitch. The home manager was left wondering whether there was actually more than one Dixon playing. Playing for an hour a man down did not help their cause either.

AS Jeunesse Esch 1 - 3 Real Zaragoza C.F.
44. Per Askerblom 25. Nicky Hofs
70. Bovar Karim
80. Nicky Hofs

Despite being pegged back after Hof's first goal, he added another to fellow Midfielder Kerim's 70th minute header to take Zaragoza through. Yet another away game against against Drogheda United from 4L awaits, but Zaragoza should have enough to reach round 3.

Galatasaray SK 2 - 3 Halmstad BK
72. Yildirim Korkmaz 15. Masumi Hujii
88. Yildirim Korkmaz 35. Devon Pierre
80. Devon Pierre

Halmstad will be very pleased to have overcome a combative Galatasaray side. Being two up at the break they always managed to stay just out of reach of the Turkish side. A home tie against Xamax Neuchâtel of 3C is their reward.

Fenerbahçe 1 - 1 King Faisal Club
90. Hugo Molina 90. Pedro Rui da Mota Rei
s

Fenerbahçe must have been gutted to go out in what was a poor game who's only highlights were two goals in the final minute. A sterile extra time period failed to seperate the teams. So to penalties and with Park missing the goal by some considerable margin, Fenerbahçe were out.

Ottawa Fury 0 - 0 Aalborg Boldspilklub

An all 3K affair produced no goals in regular or extra time and so penalties were to decide the fates of the teams. Keeper Robert Domagała excelled in the shoot out saving 2 Aalborg spot kiscks to take them through for a meeting with Beckham less LA Galaxy of 4M and condemn the bottom side to contemplate their league survival.

FC National Bucuresti 3 - 1 Lokomotiv Moskva
36. Enrique Escobar 84. Aleksandr Gavryushko
54. Enrique Escobar
78. Yiotis Christophis

Despite scoring a late goal, Lokomotiv were well beaten by a strong Bucharest side for whom Escabar showed what a class act he may become as he gets older. The 4th division side provided the major upset in 3K.

So 7 of a possible 11 teams through to the next round is a pretty good return for this division, perhaps giving an indication of the strength of the teams and the challenge ahead for the teams wishing to win that one promotion spot.

Round 2 matches

FK Vardar 0 - 0 Ottowa Fury

A very even game with both teams cancelling each other out ended in a stalemate. Bart Goor's late booking for a mis-timed challenge, had more
to do with tired legs than any malice, but it still earned him a red meaning he will miss the next game.

Real Madrid CDF 4 - 0 Lokomotiv Moskva

3. Vadim Kagramanov
33. Julio César Gutiérrez
48. Julio César Gutiérrez
72. Scott Chipperfield

Real Madrid continued their good start to the season as they gave Lokomotiv a bit of a footballing lesson. Lidaks in the Madrid goal was suprisingly
given the Man of the match when all he had to do all game was watch his opposite number pick the ball out his net. Gutiérrez was surely a more
deserving recipient, scoring twice and setting up the other two.

Real Zaragoza C.F. 2 - 0 FC Skonto Riga

50. Martin Palermo
65. Martin Palermo

A first win of the season will have been welcomed in Zaragoza after the dissapointing draw last game. Martin Palermo scored both goals in a game
where they really should have scored more. Their cause wasn't helped when captain McCall was sent of just before the hour, for one crude lunge on
Riga's Vlasik and then a second a minutre later for calling the referee alsorts. A really silly sending off from someone with the experience to know better.

Feyenoord Rotterdam 2 - 3 Halmstad BK

15. Edgar Baretto
42. Eric Chakhgueldian
45. Edgar Baretto
45. Nicola Mantovani
69. Victor Zubov

A great game this one which could have gone either way, but it was the away side that took advantage of a visibly tiring Feyenoord side to score a 69th
minute winner. Another red car for Kirita did his side no favours as his side were leading 1-0 when he was sent off. I would imagine there were some
harsh words exchanged in the privacy of the dressing room. That shouldn't ditract from the performance of Zubov howver who created one goal and
scored the winner in a super performance that rolled back the years.

Barcelona de Guayaquil 3 - 2 Aalborg Boldspilklub

21. Nuno Benevides
30. Branislav Kuzeljevic

36. Bruno Soares
48. Hiroshi Murakami
81. Yaw Issifu

This was a game that Barcelona de Guayaquil dominated, but it was one where they could so easily have dropped two points. They were cruising at 3-1
up in a game that they had dominated up to that point. Aalborg had struggled to create anything and had resorted to some pretty ugly challenges to slow
the Barcelona creative players. This led to a rash of yellow cards. Aalborg however scored their second from a well worked free kick to make for a very
nervy last 10 minutes which wasn't helped when the referee added on nearly 5 minutes of injury time and Lomski had a chance at the death to snatch a
draw but could only find row Z with an open goal begging.

Bologna FC 1909 3 - 2 Fenerbahçe

18. Isaac Tchigbo
32. Espen Askeladden
44. Marko Sanvic
52. Marko Sanvic

54. Bailey Austin

Fenerbahçe scored first and last in a pulsating game, however individual mistakes from Kulik who was poor and Rojas led to three Bologna scores which
game them the three points. David Trezeguet was sent off just before half time for a forwards challenge that was more clumsy than malicious but a silly
booking in the first quarter but a shirt tug shows what damage an unthinking action can cause. Sanvic for the home side was the stand out player with two
quality goals.

Round 3 matches

Aalborg Boldspilklub 0 - 3 Real Zaragoza C.F.

40. Bovar Karim
50. Nicky Hofs
60. Martin Palermo

Zaragoza chose the away game against Aalborg to put in their first quality team performance where everyone played well.
Nicky Hofs and Bovar Karim have started to click again as they pick up where they let off when playing for Zagreb.
Palermo scored his third goal in two games to make the game safe but it was Hofs who pulled all the strings and was
nominated Man of the match. Bruno Soares was unable to contain his frustration and was sent off just prior to the final whistle
for petulently throwing the ball at the referee in a Rooneyesque show of temper.

FC Skonto Riga 3 - 3 Feyenoord Rotterdam

15. Edgar Baretto
21. Andrei Miknevitz
25. Shinji Ono
49. Andrey Danilovs
55. Michel van der Kolk
84. Andrey Danilovs

A fantastic see-saw game that saw both sides have the lead only to be pegged back. Feyenoord put in the better team
performance, whereas Riga had the standout individual performer in Danilovs who scored two including the final equalizer
which was worthy of winning the tie, but at least salvaged a point. Feyenoord manager Paulo Alexanre must be concerned
that the team are playing well in attack but the defensive unit has not yet gelled as he would like.

Ottawa Fury 1 - 1 Bologna FC 1909

33. Pablo Cúper
42. Espen Askeladden

A very even game ended up all square with first half goals from Cúper and Askeladden ensuring the points were shared. Miguel Santos
was sent off for a clumsy challenge on Askeladden who had earlier scored from the spot. The award of the penalty for a push looked to
be very dubious as there seemed to be minimal contact on Sanvic, but he went down screaming as if he had been shot and the referee
pointed to the spot. The Ottawa manager was furious, but the Bologna manager claimed not to have seen the incident.

Fenerbahçe 4 - 1 Lokomotiv Moskva

8. Isaac Tchigbo
28. Isaac Tchigbo
32. Jung-Kuk Han
40. Isaac Tchigbo

60. Roman Klementjev

The undoubted star of the show was Isaac Tchigbo who completed a hat-trick before half time. Each goal was completely different, but
highlighted the Nigerians shooting ability with one from outside the area, his technique to chip an onrushing Kantonistov and his vision
while passing the ball into the Lokomotiv net from just inside his own half. It was a shame that Bencheikh did not show the same composure
as the referee sent him from the field for a needless challenge on a very poor Serrano.

Barcelona de Guayaquil 3 - 2 Real Madrid CDF

30. Alexey Dudin
42. own goal

65. Nicolas Ioannou
75. Nicolas Ioannou
81. Nuno Benevides

Real suffered their first defeat of the season, but seemed determined to show their manager that they could challenge this season after he wrote off
their chances in the lead up to the match. Although the team talk at half time seemed to inspire Orome Man's players who came out for the second
half a team possessed as they tried to overcome a two goal defecit. Goals from Dudin and an own goal from Conget left Real with a mountain to climb
but Ioannou gave them hope with two headers from inside the six yard area from Kagramanov crosses. However Benevides was to have the final say
popping up unmarked insidethe Real area to tap in a superb through ball from man of the match Kuzeljevic.

Halmstad BK 3 - 1 FK Vardar

12. Marko Ivaštinović
27. Victor Zubov
36. Masumi Hujii

45. Hristo Yovov

Halmstad had this game won at half time and only a slight period of complacency which allowed Vardar to score a consolation marred this comfortable win.
Victor Zubov once again showed what a quality player he is with a superb 25 yerds screamer and Halmstad manager Nicu Drinceanu, must be praying that
he stays fit and keeps his discipline as he is vital to the teams performance. Zubov must be an early contender for top scorer in the division.

3K Cup performances - Round 2

ImageReal Madrid CDF 1 - 0 Mamelodi Sundowns FC

120. own goal

The tightest of tight games was decided in the very last minute of extra time with a towering header which nearly broke the net from Cato Kalland. Unfortunately he chose the wrong end to connect with this powerful header and put it past his own keeper Benjamin Bahlmann.
Madrid will be counting their lucky stars as for long periods they were under pressure after Berenik got himself sent off early in the second half. Only outstanding performances from Guduric and man of the match Lidaks saw them through. Ioannou must have been the most relieved man on the pitch having missed a penalty in regulation time and being first on the list of panalty takers. Who says there is no pressure on players. An away tie to division 3 side Hajduk Split awaits in the 3rd round.

River Plate 2 - 0 Bologna FC 1909 Image

45. Ilian Garov
90. Roger Alonso

Bologna will be dissapointed to go out as weakly as they did creating little and leaking two goals against a decent, but by no means outstanding River Plate side. River Plate put their indiferent league form out of their minds and produced some flowing attractive football, with Alonso, Testa and Beierholm linking up to control possession and make Maduro, Paluzzi and van de Velde chase shadows for long periods. Rafael Martínez was made man of the match for his superb distribution which idirectly led to both goals. Ilian Garov was slightly embarrased to be credited with an assist when in truth the ball hit him full on in the face and rebounded to an unmarked Garov who literally walked it into an empty net.

Drogheda United 1 - 2 Real Zaragoza C.F. Image

60. Fabián Leonar Padilla
65. Omar Bravo
90. Mark Cooke

Zaragoza manager Andy Baker must have felt confident of a result against 4th division opposition as he rested several players and bought in some fringe players like Malet, Pereira Fernandes and Padilla. Initially this looked like it might backfire as Drogheda produced a good first half performance to go in all square. However after what must have been some strong words in the dressing room, the players came out in a different frame of mind and started to show what they are capable of. Braaten was calmness personified at the back and Padilla and Bravo converted in a ten minute spell that should have seen at least another two goals. Padilla must have been pleased to show the manager what he is capable of having only been involved in a single league match thus far.

ImageHalmstad BK 3 - 2 Xamax Neuchâtel FC

10. Devon Pierre
24. Tommaso Brun
60. Cristoph Dobler
65. Alejandro Cornejo

72. David Späni

A typical cup game this one, lots of end to end stuff and some full blooded challenges which caused the referee to issue 9 yellow cards, but for once everyone managed to stay on the field. With the greate possession Halmstad always looked like they would be in the draw for the next round, but Neuchâtel had enough chances to suggest that with better finishing the outcome could have been very different. Despite not scoring Masumi Hujii created space for other players and his link up play was a joy to watch and was rightly voted star man.

ImageFeyenoord Rotterdam 2 - 1 Boca Juniors

49. Armands Vanin
84. Francisco Pruna

90. Gabriel Omar Batistuta

The late consolation goal from Batistuta was really just that. Boca Juniors were a shadow of the team they were 2-3 seasons ago and the were outplayed by a very good Feyenoord side. Shinji Ono continued his good league form in the cup and produced a delightful pass for Pruna to outpace the defence and round Handanovič with ease to score. Midfielder David Degen will have been dissapointed with his performance as he was needlessly booked and sent several passes straight to the opposition. Feyenoord played with an interesting formation, which seemed to work on the day, but may be found out by teams with a bit more pace. Bate Borisov from 3I await in the next round.

ImageFK Vardar 0 - 1 Kansas City Wizards

15. Sergey Pishnik

A nasty spiteful game was only lightened by a neat finish from Pishnik on 15 minutes. The game was marred by an off the ball incident between Vardar's Pahor and Kansas City's Domocos. However the referee only saw the retaliation from Domocos and gave him a straight red. Pahor will be waiting to see if the FG mods take any further action. Bâ had already been sent of for headbutting Kansas City keeper Nazo right in front of the referee. Nazo had the last laugh however as he got up after being stitched back together and put in a man of the match performance.

Los Angeles Galaxy 0 - 1 Ottawa FuryImage

30. Pablo Cúper

This game should have been won by a much larger margin as Ottawa dominted their opposition from across the border and had veteran midfielders Creve and Goor both not seen red, they probably would have done. There is no documented history of unpleasantness between the two sides, but from the way the two teams went at each other, you would not have known it. Cúper produced a moment of individual brilliance to get a free kick up and over the wall right into the top corner as Chedeba stood and watched from the middle of the goal. A hoime tie against FC WIT Georgia should see Ottowa progress to the fourth round as long as they can keep their discipline.

So 5 wins out of 7 is a very good performance from a 3rd division but several teams will have their work cut out in the next round, especially Halmstad who have been drawn away at 1st division AC Chievo Verona currently 4th in the top flight.

Round 4 matches

Image Lokomotiv Moskva 1 - 0 Ottawa Fury Image

63. Nani

A pretty unremarkable game was decided by a very remarkable goal from Nani. He beat three defenders on a mazy run that seemed to be going nowhere. With no other option he hit a hopeful cross which looped over Domagała and into the net. He claimed after the match that he had seen the keeper off his line, but in truth with his inability to even pass to a team mate in evidence all game that stretched the imagination of all but the die hard Moscow fan.

Image FK Vardar 0 - 0 FC Skonto Riga Image

Both teams showed enough quality to show that they had enough to win, but neither team could find that all important goal. Bruce Grobbelaar was the main reason for the stalemate, making a string of outstanding saves and rightly took home the man of the match champagne. Barry Hislop did his team no favours receiving a straight red for a professional foul.

Image Real Madrid CDF 4 - 2 Fenerbahçe Image

3. Scott Chipperfield
9. Julio César Gutiérrez
27. Julio César Gutiérrez
63. Vadim Kagramanov

68. Jean-Paul Rodrigues
76. Hugo Molina

Real Madrid got back to winning ways in a game as exciting and unpredictable as the first two games were dull and lifeless. Julio César Gutiérrez is turning into the red hot striker of the division and Real Madrid are scoring more goals than anyone. Madrid looked to be cruising going 4-0 up after 63 minutes, but Fenerbahçe scored two goals in 8 minutes to make the last 15 minutes more uncomfortable than they really should have been. Aaron Cable must have been dissapointed in his league debut to be sent of for two very bad challenges which could have seen a red card for each on another day.

Image Feyenoord Rotterdam 3 - 2 Aalborg Boldspilklub Image
8. Edgar Baretto
22. Goran Cizmek
33. Goran Cizmek
68. Shinji Ono
84. Edgar Baretto

Goran Cizmek must be the most gutted person in Aalborg as he scored twice to put his side 2-1 up only to see Ono and Baretto wipe out that lead to take the three points. Paulo Barbosa needs to look in the mirror as he was sent off for the second time in four games and his team slumped further at the foot of the table.

Image Real Zaragoza C.F. 1 - 0 Barcelona de Guayaquil Image

36. Akinyemi Obasi

Although Zaragoza won this game, their dominance of the game should have resulted in a much greater scoreline. Obasi finished confidently to take a lead just after the half hour, but the rest of the game was littered with missed opportunities and good defending from Barcelona. Unless the forwards start to convert these chances Zaragoza may start to drop points and the manager may look to freshen up the front line.

Image Bologna FC 1909 2 - 2 Halmstad BK Image

35. Masumi Hujii
64. Hedwiges Maduro
80. Vegard Langemyr

80. Victor Zubov

Two goals inside a minute brought joy for one team which immediately turned to despair as Halmstad went straight up the other end and Zubov finished off a flowing move to take a share of the spoils. Sergei Zemlinski and Tomasz Siekierski both made important saves, but in truth neither team looked like they wanted to win the game.

Round 5 Matches

Image Aalborg Boldspilklub 1 - 1 FK Vardar Image

11. Jurije Vance
90. Fernando Pataco

A late, late goal from Aalborg captain Fernendo Pataco, gained them their first point of the season, but in truth it was no more than they deserved for competing well in a very even game. However, with four minutes remaining and still a goal down it looked unlikely they would get anything from the game as Jon Foran was sent off for throwing an elbow at Ron Vlaar. No contact was made, but the intent was clear. Bruce Grobelaar put in another man of the match performance between the sticks, but will have been dissapointed to spill Alfred Shara's well hit shot right at the feet of Pataco, who simply had a tap in. Cue wild celebrations.

This was a game of swinging fortunes with Barcelona scoring and then Feyenoord coming back. When Hiroshi Murakami headed in a cross from Chima Ehiorobo that should have been it, but Stephan Ponte and Martin Udovič, contrived to get themselves sent off within four minutes of each other to give manager Adrian Ivan a very nervous last couple of minutes. He will be plased with the result and the performance up to that point against a team that was level on points at the start of the game. Branislav Kuzeljevic again showed his class with a goal and an assist, while Edgar Baretto for the away side must be getting frstrated with the lack of good ball he is receiving.

15. Raimonds Vlasik
22. Roelof van de Velde
90. Raimonds Vlasik

This game looked to be petering out into a draw until Raimonds Vlasik produced a strike of such quality that it put all that had preceded it in the shade. Howvere despite scoring both goals it was difficult to remember anything else that he had done to contribute to the game. Lars Christiansen had litterally run himself into the ground trying to cover for his engmatic striker and was rightly voted the star man. Peter Seppänen was sent of for foul and abusive language after protesting at the award of the free kick that led to the winning goal.

Image Ottawa Fury 1 - 1 Fenerbahçe Image

24. Emmanuel Amunike
72. David Trezeguet

Points shared in this game where Ottawa marginally shaded the possession, but where Fenerbahçe had slightly the better chances. Emmanuel Amunike scored a wonder goal on 24 minutes beating 3 players before sitting keeper Jan Kjell Larsen on his backside with a superb dummy to leave a simple tap in for his goal. David Trezeguet's goal was clearly a result of training ground drills as he finished a neat free kick although the ball dropped to him rather fortuetously as Antonio Rojas read what was happening but his rushed clearance fell straight to the unmarked Trezeguet.

Image Halmstad BK 3 - 0 Lokomotiv Moskva Image

15. Hamadi Jabi
36. Roderick Granville
48. Victor Zubov

Title chasing Halmstad cruised to a comfortable win against Moscow in a game they dominated from start to finish. In truth they could have won by a wider margin had more chances fallen to Zubov, rather than the wasteful Pierre. Zubov received his fourth man of the match award in 5 games and is probably the most dangerous striker in the division. There was a moment of farce just after half time when the referee booked a player for leaving the field of play without permission, only to have it pointed out, that the player in question was actually his assistant referee. Who says referees don't know what they are doing.

Image Real Zaragoza C.F. 3 - 2 Real Madrid CDF Image

33. Mark Schulte
45. Martin Palermo
60. Maurizio Di Belardino

70. Vadim Kagramanov
80. Julio César Gutiérrez

This was a game Zaragoza should have won by a much more comfortable margin being three up on the hour the game looked over. Free scoring Madrid had other ideas however and scored two good goals to give themselves a chance of getting a point against the league leaders. American defender Mark Schulte may have been the cause of the problems having been sent off after 55 minutes for a very crude lunge on Australian Scott Chipperfield. The Australian had plenty to say as Schulte left the field.

Cup performance Round 3

Image FK Artmedia Bratislava 1 - 1 Real Zaragoza C.F. Image
64. Dmitry Shirin
70. Jörg Scheiblauer

The decision to rest four players for the weekend away league game ultimately cost Zaragoza this match. The game turned into a tight nervous affair with few chances and even less creativity. Dmitry Shirin and Jörg Scheiblauer scored goals that both owed more to luck than skill. Omar Bravo was told before the game to keep his nose clean so he was available for the weekend, advice he clearly ignored and got himself sent off. Penalties decided this tie and Mamat and Shirin both missed before Obasi had his penalty saved by Victor Ordabayev to hand Bratislava the win.

Image AC Chievo Verona 2 - 0 Halmstad BK Image
24. Volodymir Fedorenko
68. Tas Bulut

A good effort from Halmstad saw them stretch First division opposition but were unltimately well beaten. Verona paid Halmstad a big complement by playing their first team and it is credit to Halmstad's players that only two goals were scored. The experience will surely do the no harm in the long term.

Image Feyenoord Rotterdam 3 - 0 FC BATE Borisov Image
20. Michel van der Kolk
64. own goal
72. Shinji Ono

Feyenoord proved that a team from 3K can win in the 3rd round with a comfortable win, but at a cost. Pivotal player Shinji Ono picked up a yellow card which means he misses the game against top of the table Zaragoza this Saturday. That was far from all the players minds however as they celebrated reaching the next round with a great team performance to get a fourth home game on the trot against Barry Town.

Image Ottawa Fury 3 - 2 FC WIT Georgia Image

22. Archil Shashiashvili
81. own goal
97. Rashaad Mashaba
104. Pablo Cúper

120. Archil Akhalaia

Ottawa belied their poor league position with a good win in the cup that should inspire them to go on and move out of the relegation places. They went behind to a soft goal on 22 minutes, much against the run of play. This seemed to shake them and they could easily have gone two or even three down, but they rode their luck and just when it looked like time would run out they equalised to take the game into extra time. Two further goals in the extra period took them clear of a tiring Georgia side and into the next round. A last minute consolation was scant consolation for Georgia who must have had a very miserable trip home.

Image HNK Hajduk Split 2 - 1 Real Madrid CDF Image

5. Álvaro Alejan Méndez
15. Igor Berenik
40. Achille Ekwalla

Real Madrid crashed out to a decent Hajduk Split side although the decision to rest some players also backfired here as the rested players were really missed. Ioannou let his team mates down by getting himself sent of for striking central defender Jerko Ursanic square between the eyes, having already been booked. What was the referee to do other than give him an early bath.

Two wins out of five is a very poor return for a competitive league and some of the managers maybe had their eyes on other things. Shame on them.

Round 8 Review

Image FK Vardar 2 - 3 Feyenoord Rotterdam Image

6. Borut Šenk
30. Michel van der Kolk
45. Toni Madzovski
72. Zoranco Toleski
78. Cristian Daniel Kirita

This was a game that Feyenoord should have won comfortably, but lapses of concentration from the defence kept giving Vardar hope. Leading 2-0 with goals from Senk and van der Kolk and only seconds showing on the clock before half time, Senk passed the ball back to his keeper without looking only for Madzovski to be standing between him and the hapless Hogedoorn, who calmly passed the ball in. Senk must have wished the ground would open up and swallow him. Vardar scored again to equlise the scores with only 18 minutes left with a deft flick from Toleski to Yoyov's great cross. Kirita finally won the tie with a 35 yard free-kick which went in off the post with Bruce Grobelaar just an interested spectator. Despite not scoring Edgar Baretto was a constant threat.

Image Real Madrid CDF 3 - 6 Halmstad BK Image

4. Masumi Hujii
8. Victor Zubov
16. Marko Ivaštinović
24. Masumi Hujii
32. Agustín Ponce
36. Julio César Gutiérrez
48. Nery Alfaro
56. Victor Zubov
66. Julio César Gutiérrez

What a game, 9 goals, barely a tackle made all game but the referee still managed to dish out four yellow cards, although Ponce did get his for jumping into the small pocket of away fans when he scored. Victor Zubov showed again why he is the class forward in the division with his seventh and eighth goals and three more assists. It wont be too much longer before the 2nd division scouts are sniffing around to give him one more shot at the big time. At 5-1 down Madrid would have been forgiven for throwing in the towel, but they battled on bravely and scored two second half goals that were equally as good as any that Halmstad scored. Lidaks in the Madrid goal will have been dissapointed with his contribution and must improve otherwise Orome Man may consider giving Rui Martins his chance between the sticks.

Image Ottawa Fury 2 - 1 FC Skonto Riga Image

33. Andrey Danilovs
60. Emmanuel Amunike
70. Emmanuel Amunike

For an hour Skonta bossed this game and really should have been 3-0 up, but as it was they only scored one through Andrey Danilovs and they then appeared to run out of steam. The catalyst for this was a really nasty challenge from Gigonoli on Amunike just before the hour and this earned him a second yellow, although in truth it probably warranted a red on its own. One Aminuke recovered from this virtual assault, he seemed to be on a one man mission to win the game and scored two goals that showed what he is capable of when he puts his mind to it.

Image Fenerbahçe 2 - 1 Aalborg Boldspilklub Image

18. Armando da Silva Cabral
24. Isaac Tchigbo
78. Isaac Tchigbo

Aalborg continued their dreadful away form and lost again to a decent Fenerbahçe side, for who Tchigbo showed again what a lethal finisher he is. He had two chances and never looked like missing either to take his tally for the season to 7. Jean-Paul Rodrigues pulled the strings for Fenerbahçe who despite going behind to an 18th minute header from da Silva Cabral, never panicked and continued to play football. This despite a very robust approach from Aalborg wihich led to another 4 bookings, who now have the worst disciplinary record in the league with 16 seperate players being cautioned and 7 of those seeing red. The fines must really be mounting up.

Image Lokomotiv Moskva 2 - 3 Barcelona de Guayaquil Image

9. Martin Udovič
36. Nani
42. Chima Ehiorobo
54. Alexey Kuznetsov
60. Chima Ehiorobo

Barcelona made hard work of what should have been a relatively easy game against bottom of the table Lokomotiv. Stephan Ponte made things difficult for his team mates getting himself sent off for a nasty looking elbow on Kuznetsov as he scored his goal which resulted in a mass brawl. Once the referee and his assistants had regained order, he rightly sent of Ponte, but there were surely more candidates to go in the book other than Thierry Andrey, who's only crime seemed to be getting in the way of a nasty looking punch from Rui Marques who can count himself very lucky that none of the officials saw it. Chima Ehiorobo stayed clear of all the trouble and scored two really good goals from superb passes from the increasingly influential Benevides.

Image Bologna FC 1909 2 - 3 Real Zaragoza C.F. Image

49. Omar Bravo
63. Bovar Karim
80. Espen Askeladden
84. Akinyemi Obasi
90. Marko Sanvic

Top of the table Zaragoza are having to rely on their team spirit as again their discipline let them down. A 5th red card in 8 games is surely too many for a team looking to gain promotion to the 2nd division. Zaragoza have had five different players get Man of the match awards this season and eight different players have scored goals which shows how the team are coping when down to ten men. It wouls surely be easier to keep all ten on the pitch and win games more comfortably. Despite the 0-0 scoreline at half time, Zaragoza had enough chances to win this match before the break. But 0-0 it was and goals from Bravo his first of the season and Karim settled nerves, despite a neat finish from Askeladden giving a glimpse of what a great player he has been in the past. Obasi finished of a flowing passing move with a tap in from about a yard to secure the points, Bravo's form is very dissapointing from a player who was picked out as someone who would be one of the stars of the league.

Belated Cup Round 4 review

Apologies, I have only just realised when I came to do round 5 that I forgot round 4.

Image Feyenoord Rotterdam 3 - 0 Barry Town Image

36. Shinji Ono
48. Francisco Pruna
60. Shinji Ono

A very dominant performance from Feyenoord who seem to be saving their best performances for the cup. Shinji Ono was the star of the show with two goals, both scored from late runs into the box and cut backs from Michel van der Kolk. These two enjoy playing together despite rumours that off the pitch they cannot bear to be in the same room together. Barry Town were never in the tie and should have been dead and buried by half time. It didn't get any better after the break and even then the expected fight to stay in the cup never materialised. Feyenoord go away to FC Kotayk from 3J and must hope their form in the cup holds.

Image Chivas 3 - 0 Ottawa Fury Image

42. Neoclis Markou
54. Anatoly Belousov
72. Dalibor Stevanovic

As well as they have played up till now, it ended here for Ottawa against a Chivas side from the first division, who just outclassed them. Despite having sweeper Bill Cannon sent off in the last minute this was always comfortable for the top division team and in truth this could have been 7 or 8 if Stevanovic had not left his shooting boots at home. A dissapointing performance from Ottawa, leaving only Feyenoord from 3K to fly the flag.

Cup round 5

Image FC Kotayk 2 - 2 Feyenoord Rotterdam Image

12. Vytautas Brazauskas
90. Imre Madar
105. own goal
110. Arnaud Claus

Penalties 4-2

For much of this game Shinji Ono's efforts looked like they would be wasted as Kotayk led until the last minute when Imre Madar met a Armands Vanin cross with literally the last kick of the game to equalise and send the game into extra time. An own goal from Arnaud Claus then turned the tie on its head as it was Feyenoord that looked odds on to go through. Claus then equalised to take the game to penalties which was too tense for words. That tension obviously got to the young Croatian Ivar Bigyin who supprisingly took one of the Feyenoord penalties and actually managed to get the ball out of the stadium.

Feyenoord carried the hopes of 3k in the cup, but now that involvement is over for another year.

Image FK Vardar 3 - 0 Real Madrid CDF Image
54. Jurije Vance
60. Hristo Yovov
78. Jurije Vance

Poor discipline cost Real after a solid first half performance, but Vardar turned the screw after the break and scored two good goals and one incredibly lucky one to take the three points. Jurije Vance scored the two good goals with a towering header and a neat finish from the edge of the area. Hristo Yoyov saw his tame shot hit 2 defenders on the way to hitting a post and then going in off the luckless Martins for the most bizarre goal this commentator has ever seen.

Image Aalborg Boldspilklub 2 - 1 Ottawa Fury Image

6. Patrik Lomski
72. Pablo Cúper
78. Ercan Fuchs

Aalborg finally broke their duck for the season against fellow cellar dwellers Ottawa. Goals from Lomski and Fuchs proved to be the difference in what was essentially the beginning of the wooden spoon avoidance fight. The game was very poor and only Patrik Lomski and Ercan Fuchs showed the sort of class that is expected at this level. Both teams may be looking to next season already.

Image Real Zaragoza C.F. 4 - 0 Lokomotiv Moskva Image

6. Martin Palermo
18. Akinyemi Obasi
51. Maurizio Di Belardino
63. Martin Palermo

Andy Baker was obviously confident of the result as he game a couple of the back up players a run out and none of them let him down against a Moscow team who are struggling this year.Martin Palermo continued his good form this season, scoring two setting up one and deservedly being awarded the star man prize. Zaragoza continued their appalling defensive record with Di Belardino the recipient this time as the players shrugged off his loss to record a comfortable victory.

Image Barcelona de Guayaquil 2 - 1 Fenerbahçe Image

27. Nuno Benevides
57. Branislav Kuzeljevic

64. David Trezeguet

Barcelona kept pace with Zaragoza at the top with a good win against a strong Fenerbahçe side. Kuzeljevic continued his superb form this season with a goal but it was Nuno Benevides who pulled all the strings and ran the game without appearing to break into a sweat. David Trezeguet scored a goal on 64 minutes to set up a tense finale and Silhavy and the usually reliable Tchigbo both squandered absolute sitters to gain a share of the spoils, however it was not to be.

Image FC Skonto Riga 1 - 4 Halmstad BK Image

12. Andrey Danilovs
36. Árpád Koltai
52. Masumi Hujii
56. Masumi Hujii
88. Eero Korte

Halmstad overcame an early Danilovs goal to take an ultimately comfortable victory over Riga. Once Koltao and Ponce got their act together the Riga midfield spent the rest of the game chasing shadows and it was all too much for Boris Platanov to bear as he was sent off for two spiteful challenges that contained real intent. Hujii had his best game in Halmstad shirt to date to score two and looked like a quality player.

Image Feyenoord Rotterdam 1 - 0 Bologna FC 1909 Image

84. Andrea Melloni

This game looked to be drifting towards a goalless draw until Cristian Daniel Kirita spotted a superb run by Andrea Melloni and deposited the ball right onto his left foot from all of 60 yards. Melloni controlled effertlessly with his first touch and then deflected the ball past the onrushing Zemlinski with his second. A simple yet brilliant goal, worthy of winning any game.

55. Marko Sanvic

Bologna made hard work of despatching Vardar. Despite the lions share of the possession and a hatful of chances, they could only manage a single scrambled goal from Marko Sanvic who scored from about a foot out as he toe poked the ball home after at least four other players had attempted to score. Eric Bamuza Sono was sent off for a second bookable offence which involved leaving the pitch to confront a very vocal supporter having missed another sitter. Wilfred Wusu seemed to pick up every cross and through ball that Vardar attempted.

Feyenoord took Moscow to the cleaners and it is looking increasingly like Moscow will be playing fourth division football next season. Helisi Jurajwer was the man pulling the strings and set up three of the four goals. Moscow didn't have a single player that distinguished themselves in any way and the players will have to play with a bit more pride if they are to prevent their supporters turning on them.

44. Hamadi Jabi

Halmstad made hard work of beating Aalborg. Despite their recent improvement in form Aalborg will have been amazed at Halmstad's lack of ambition and with a little more quality in their finishing they could have got something from this game, but it was not to be. Hamadi Jabi scored a thunderbolt free kick from 30 yards that left Péter Simon with no chance, but the referee was left with no option after a really awful challenge from Gabriele Genzano which earnt him a red card.

This was a truly forgettable game in which both teams were bereft of ideas or passion and it was no surprise that no goals where forthcoming. The game had the feel of an under 9's match as all of the players seemed to spend the whole game in the centre circle.

80. Aleksander Rodič

Ottawa produced a huge surprise as Barcelona were expected to steamroller Ottawa, but Ottawa had other ides and without a slip from Omar Carceglia which let in Aleksander Rodič for the equaliser. This was hard on the youngster as he had played well up to that point. Aleksander Rodič showed what a class act he is with two goals and made some other big egos look very ordinary.

Image Fenerbahçe 0 - 0 Real Zaragoza C.F. Image

Fenerbahçe became the first team to prevent Zaragoza scoring this season as they played very well to gain a share of the spoils. Jan Kjell Larsen was the main reason for this as he had an outstanding game to earn the man of the match prize as he pulled of a string of amazing saves to leave the Zaragoza forwards ultimately bewildered.
